South Korea & North Korean peace talks are rare over the years, but were you aware that in a recent rare North Korea news reunification announcement, North Korea called for peace talks across the Korean peninsula? Most don't because the news media -- who has overseen and formulated public sentiment to tolerate decades of war -- all but ignored it, favoring instead to rehash North Korea propaganda and talks of North Korea vs. USA. But we’re not about to. According to a Reuters report, North Korea made a “rare” announcement addressed to all Koreans “home and abroad” calling for a “breakthrough” for unification without the help of other countries. The announcement, issued after a joint meeting of government and political parties, said Koreans should “promote contact, travel, cooperation between North and South Korea” and wage an energetic drive to defuse the acute military tension toward creating a peaceful climate on the Korean peninsula. The announcement said this year is meaningful for both North and South Korea as it is the 70th anniversary of the founding of North Korea while South Korea will be hosting the Winter Olympics next month. The response: While there were a handful of articles that mentioned this announcement, the revelation was largely ignored by MAINSTREAM MEDIA in the US. Several days later, North Korea dropped the initiative after accusing South Korea’s media of encouraging “insulting” public sentiment towards the North. Finally, we tweeted the story and it sparked barely ANY INTEREST whatsoever from our audience. Why this matters: When the Hawaiian public was alerted to an incoming missile, PANIC ensued as the population was forced to face their imminent extinction. As we know, it turned out to be a false alarm, but it’s a fact that there are people that live with varying levels of FEAR as a result of the tensions that exist between the US and North Korea and their nuclear missile program. So when we’re met with a sliver of good news regarding North Korea – lending to the steps that are ultimately REQUIRED to start down a path other than the dark one we’ve been on – South Korea’s media INSULTS the North upsetting any chances for progress. Sure, South Korea has had to live under the oppressive annoyance of the Rocket Man to the North and holds a deep animosity toward the regime for all they have done, but causing friction through the MEDIA in the face of an opportunity to initiate conversations on the subject of peace isn’t only reckless, it only serves to prolong the status quo. And how about Western media? Liberal or conservative, it outright IGNORED the opportunity to share this news with the public in an effort to quell any underlying fears, despite all that happened in Hawaii. Finally, our own audience wasn’t interested in the prospect for peace with North Korea as indicated by the lack of engagement with the story. So we put the question to you the audience: WHY?. WHY did South Korea’s MEDIA sabotage discussions toward peace on the Korean peninsula at this time specifically? Maybe they don’t consider Kim Jong Un to be genuine. But is it the media’s place to decide? Or perhaps there is a broader global agenda at play? WHY did Western media all but ignore reporting this “rare” announcement for peace discussions between the North and South, but cover heavily the purported size of each other’s nuclear launch buttons? Perhaps this signals the Western world’s desire for a conflict for economic and/or geopolitical reasons. After all, we have warehouses full of bombs collecting dust. WHY aren’t Americans interested in subduing their fears on just the chance – no matter how fleeting -- this led to something good? For if there is to be peace, this is exactly how it would begin. After decades of war and signs that we’ve grown tired of it all -- have we really? Or is there something deeper at play here that’s testing our innate desires to be entertained by conflict? Like a car accident along the side of the road where the thought of what we might see repulses us – but some deep-seeded subconscious curiosity of the macabre forces so many of us to look anyway. One thing is for certain, the media continues to mold our feelings and perspectives. And if we’re to wrestle back control of our future, we must circumvent these efforts for our own sakes, for our families, our friends, and our children. We must continue to wake each other up to the opportunities that have been hidden from us. And that can only be accomplished through our collective actions to push back against an agenda where our best interests are but a fading consideration.
