The .380 is an often denied round thanks to the advent of slim and trim 9mm pistols. Despite being pushed to the side, .380s still have their place in the gun world and in gun owner’s holsters. A solid contender for back-up gun or useful in situations in which a micro-compact is a necessity, the .380 pistol proves it’s not dead by a long shot.

Guns.com pulled a few .380 pistols from our own inventory for a quick look at what makes these guns viable concealed carry options.

We all knew this was coming. A bolt action rifle in .224 Valkyrie from Savage was expected on the heels of bolt guns in the Vista-born caliber by the likes of Masterpiece Arms and Mossberg. The new Prairie Hunter looks understated with its gray and black synthetic stock, but don’t let looks fool you. Like the High Country, the Prairie Hunter makes use of all things “Accu” — the Accutrigger, AccuStock, and AccuFit system. Furthermore, the threaded 22 inch barrel should be a performer on varmints and predators. MSRP will be $759.

Triple crown USPSA three-gun champion Taran Butler, of Taran Tactical Innovations, recently shared with Guns.com a few of his shooting tips to help improve your game.

According to Butler, the grip has improved drastically over the years. He recalled how in the eighties, people were locking their arms and using a weaver stance when they shot, as well as a few other defunct techniques.

Most shooters now use the combat grip, currently regarded as the correct grip for semi-automatic handguns. This grip features both thumbs riding the slide.

What Butler suggests is that shooters move their thumbs even higher on the slide and extend them forwards. “That really does make the double taps get even closer together,” he said.

Butler has an analogy that he tells shooters to help them not necessarily shoot faster, but to improve their accuracy. It goes like this; "Picture yourself on a train. It's going 100mph. The trees are going by really fast. You're dozing out. You don't really care. If I tell you look at that one oak tree, and watch it as the train goes by, it's totally clear. You can see it go by. That's the sights on a gun when you're going fast. Did the train slow down? No. You just focused better while you were shooting. That's the key to all of the best shooters in the world.

When they have their best run, their best stages, they're not, 'I'm going to burn this down!' and they're shooting over here and thinking about their next window, the next course. No, they're in the moment of the sights - shooting. That's why when they're done, the results are the best hits possible and the best scores possible."

International Firearms Corporation, the boutique importer based out of Oklahoma City, showed up to SHOW Show sporting an innovative new hunting rifle from Strasser of Austria. The Evolution is designed to be a hunting rifle that can easily change caliber or take down in a matter of minutes. Perhaps the most innovative part of the rifle is that all the tools to take down the rifle are actually stored within the rifle itself. This should allow for easy on the go storage or cleaning.

The rifle features an adjustable cheek piece, a really fast straight bolt, and over 20 different caliber combinations, which as you can see can be switched very easily. A lever on the back on the tang allows you to quickly remove the trigger group. The trigger can be set at three different weights, from 2lbs to 5lbs. The rifle also features a set trigger which can be set to 2.5oz. The Evolution will be available in two different models, a traditional walnut and a laminated grey and starting MSRP will be $3,400.

The words “tactical” and “plinker” often don’t come together. Yet, there are a growing number of companies that offer full-sized versions of their guns in .22 LR. Why would someone want this you might ask? Well, for starters .22 LR is cheap. Take, for example, the Aguila Super Extra High Velocity we shot, starting at $2.61 a box. Compare that to the same box of 50 rounds 5.56 FMJ from Aguila, with a MSRP of $19.58 and you’ve already got yourself a savings of $16.97 in the first 50 rounds alone.

Besides being cheap to shoot tactical plinkers also offer the added training bonus of being similar to larger scale models. The only difference in many of the models is the felt recoil when you go to shoot. This allows you to realistically train for pennies on the dollar compared to your larger caliber models, while still maintaining the muscle memory of the training. Have you been wanting to carry a spare mag but finding it hard to add another piece of gear to your belt? A solution to this that I have found is placing my reload in my pocket using the Neomag. Placing your reload in your pocket might seem a little unconventional but this product will position your reload for success.

The Neomag uses a rare earth magnet with a strong titanium pocket clip to maintain the orientation of your double or single stack magazine in your pocket. The Neomag holds the magazine below the pocket line to conceal the magazine. Because this product does use a magnet, magazines will need to be metal or have metal liners (Glock mags). It will will work with .380 auto through .45 acp.

Reloading from the Neomag actually came a little more intuitively than I originally expected. You can index the bullets forward or backward to match how you would typically reload from a belt. When ready to reload from the pocket simply pinch the mag with your thumb and pointer finger and then pull. After a few reps this technique became fairly easy to repeat with success.

The Neomag provided me a solution. Specifically, the Neomag moves into my EDC when I need to dress up or when I am wearing more summery clothes with less layers that would help conceal. It is also a fast and easy way to slip a spare mag into my pocket when I am running out the door.

Working in the gun industry, people often ask me when they should introduce their kids to guns. What I’ve learned over the years teaching my own kids about the subject is that it’s different for every child. Through trial and error, I found that certain lessons help more than others. While introducing shooting to kids early helps, so does taking incremental steps so they learn and appreciate the sport.

When somebody says they bought a .30-30 or .45-70, the first question is “what kind of rifle did ya get?” Magnum Research offers a different and much more intriguing answer to that question with their hardcore line of Big Frame Revolvers.

From the company of Desert Eagle fame comes this full line of over-built, serious single action revolvers. These solid stainless wheelguns are intended for hard use in any kind of conditions. While there are versions for all types of shooters, the bread-and-butter of the line centers around what the company calls the “long cylinder” models, and those babies are made for hunters. Best of all, the BFR’s are manufactured entirely in the USA.

Though the BFR’s are not new, there are some recent re-design changes, including an upgraded rear sight, as well as slight changes to both the hammer shape and grip. Long cylinder calibers include .30-30 Win, .45-70, .444 Marlin, .460, and .500 S&W.

Barrel lengths are available in either 7.5- or 10-inch variants with cut rifling, with overall lengths at 15- and 17.5-inches respectively. Finish is a clean, brushed stainless, with solid stainless steel construction. A black fixed front blade and fully adjustable rear come standard, though factory BFR’s come with a matched-silver Weaver style scope base.

This five-shooter’s rounds fill a stout, unfluted 1.75 inch cylinder. A transfer bar safety comes standard. Choices abound, though, with standard or Bisley grip frames, and a plethora of custom options from Magnum Research. The massive revolvers are built at the company’s Pillager, MN factory, so marked on the barrel.

The BFR is touted by the company as “the most powerful production single action made” with a dozen calibers in total and two frame sizes. With our focus on the biggest of the big, however, the BFR long cylinders retail for $1,302.

Nahro Arms introduced their brand new N1 subcompact 7+1 9mm pistol at the NRA Annual Meetings in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Before Beth Alcazar was a Senior Staff Writer for USCCA, before she became a sought-after voice in the concealed carry movement, she was a mom. “I still love describing myself as a mom with a gun because ultimately that’s what I am, I’m a mom,” said Alcazar. Her job duties as a mom range from counselor to alligator wrestler, she told us with a laugh, but her ultimate job responsibility is that of protector.

Alcazar started writing for the outdoor industry almost twenty years ago to learn more about PR, marketing, and to ultimately get her feet wet in a professional writing career. “I wasn’t pursuing something with shooting, it just sort of came with the program, if you will,” she said. Along the way she met many interesting people and came to appreciate the business and industry as a whole. Everything seemed to be moving in the right direction until it all came abruptly crashing down upon her.

Alcazar was let go from her job when she was 37 weeks pregnant with her third child. She was facing a c-section with no insurance, wondering how she would get through it. That’s when she decided to reach out to one of those contacts she had made in the outdoor industry, Kevin Michalowski, now the Executive Editor of Concealed Carry Magazine. Even though Michalowski gave her a shot she didn’t know if there was a place for her to write, she didn’t see herself as an expert yet.

“For the longest time I didn’t feel like I had a voice to offer… I said I’m just a mom with a gun, I don’t know if that has a place,” Alcazar said. But the USCCA and Michlowski reassured her that it not only had a place, it was desperately needed. Before she could become the expert she needed to be though she had to take a deep dive into the world of concealed carry firearms.

With a shorter grip that still maintains a 15-round capacity, FN’s new Midsize version of the 509 pistol has a lot to offer as a carry gun.

Announced just prior to SHOT Show, Tom Victa, product manager with FN, talked to Guns.com about the changes on the model from the standard 509 which has been popular on the market since it was introduced two years ago.

“It’s the smallest gun you can get a full grip on,” Victa said. “Makes it a lot easier to conceal carry, maybe appendix-style.”

The 9mm Midsize has the same 4-inch top-end/barrel as the standard 509 but features a frame with a shortened grip to produce a 26.5-ounce gun, putting it in the same category as the Glock 19, S&W M&P 2.0 Compact, and CZ P-10 C series.
